Road Guards or Out Riders

Road Guards assist the Road Captain by riding ahead and holding traffic at intersections while the procession clears the intersection. It is the responsibility of the Road Captain to get approval of the Jurisdictional Law Enforcement Agency to run Road Guards.

Road Guards will not hold the intersection for cages or chase trucks that are following the group. All circumstances ideal, a Road Guard should be solo (without a passenger) due to the danger of this job.

A Road Guard must clear an intersection and then race back to the front of the pack so he is prepared for the next intersection ahead. For this reason several Road Guards may be used depending on the size of the group ride.

When a Road Guard is in line in front of you in the pack and he pulls out to run ahead to block an intersection, you should leave his gap open for him to return to his position when his task is completed. All riders should be aware when running Road Guards you are to stay in line and be aware that motorcycles may be passing you at a considerable speed. (Don't get in his way)

Sometimes the group is too large for the Road Guard to make it all the way back to his originating position in one move. For this reason if a Road Guard pulls up beside you and slows, you should slow and let him in line ahead of you. Once he pulls out and proceeds to his position you may then close up the gap.

When Road Guards are holding an intersection it is permissible to ignore the stoplight or sign. This is ok because the Road Captain has already obtained permission from the Police in that area. Always be aware that even though you have Road Guards there are some who will ignore the Road Guards and go around them. Be cautious of your surroundings and never let yourself become less alert because you have Road Guards.

Some groups very seldom uses Road Guards, except in extenuating circumstances, due to the danger and liability. Road Guards are instructed to not confront people who discount their presence. They are to do everything possible to secure the intersection short of a confronting someone or putting himself in jeopardy. If used road guarding will only be done by single riders, no passengers.

Road Guards are only a tool the Road Captain uses to aid in moving a large pack through an intersection safely and smoothly. All riders as well as the Road Guards should practice the utmost caution during an approved Road Guard ride.
